For those of you who follow us on social media, (for those of you who don’t – what are you waiting for!?), you will have recently seen a post of a coconut grater upcycled into a wall lamp, with our caption ‘todo tiene su porqué’ (everything has a reason). These four words capture what we – at Doña Mara Beach Hotel – are about. We are about the details, the special touches, the stories behind the place, the people and the destination. We aim to open the doors to the true spirit of Bocas del Toro.
So, what’s the story behind Doña Mara Beach Hotel?
Before its life as a beach hotel, the property was the family beach house of one of the members of our team now running the hotel, Joseph Archbold, who is also the head chef and owner of the onsite restaurant Receta Michilá. Two of the other team members also have fond memories of staying at the beach house on Carenero Island when they were kids. While Bocas has changed since then – over the past 30 years (wow, makes us feel old!) – we draw from our collective nostalgia and the hotel’s history to share with guests the essence of the place, its natural island rhythm steeped in culture, stories, and memories.

And the team behind the hotel’s re-invigoration?
We are a group of four people – three from Bocas and one from the UK (who, as you can imagine, was dragged kicking and screaming to this island paradise from rainy ‘Blighty’ (as it's sometimes known by the British!)). We bring together expertise from the culinary; hospitality; design and architecture; and business and marketing worlds to create something we hope is truly special. We all have a passion to bring ‘proper’, high-quality hospitality and service to those who come to Bocas, to create personalized guest and food experiences and memories.

What does the future hold?
Doña Mara Beach Hotel is the first – of hopefully many – projects that the four of us will arm together. We are proud that with the hotel we are able to pay homage to the its namesake – Joseph’s mother Xiomara Herrera (aka Doña Mara), who fuelled Joseph’s passion for a career in the kitchen – as well as take the hotel in a new direction while staying true to its roots.

The current global crisis has made everyone look at what is important and what’s not, why each of us does what we do. We feel positive about the future, about what we – the hotel, the restaurant and Bocas as a destination – have to offer. Whenever you’re ready to experience the true essence of Bocas and taste the cultural flavors of the Caribbean, we’ll be waiting for you!

Crónicas de Carenero Vol. 1: Nuestro ‘porqué’
Para aquellos que nos siguen en redes sociales, (y los que no nos siguen aún, qué están esperando!?), habrán visto hace poco una publicación de un rallador de coco convertido en una lámpara de pared, con el título “Todo tiene su porqué”. Éstas cuatro palabras encierran lo que nosotros – en el Doña Mara Beach Hotel – somos. Somos detalles, toques especiales, historias detrás del lugar, su gente y el destino. Nuestro objetivo es abrir las puertas al verdadero espíritu de Bocas del Toro.
Entonces, ¿cuál es la historia detrás de Doña Mara Beach Hotel?
Antes de ser un hotel de playa, la propiedad era la casa de playa familiar de uno de los miembros de nuestro equipo que manejamos el hotel actualmente, Joseph Archbold, quien es también el chef de nuestro Restaurante Receta Michilá, con el que compartimos la propiedad. Otros dos miembros del equipo también comparten memorias de haberse quedado en la casa de playa en Isla Carenero durante su niñez. A pesar de que Bocas ha cambiado desde entonces – los últimos 30 años (Wao! Eso nos hace sentir viejos!) – nosotros nos basamos en nuestra nostalgia colectiva y la historia del hotel para compartir con nuestros huéspedes la esencia del lugar, su ritmo isleño natural impregnado de cultura, historias y recuerdos.
¿Y el equipo detrás de la revitalización del hotel?
Somos un grupo de cuatro personas – tres bocatoreños y una inglesa (quien, como pueden imaginarse, fue arrastrada gritando y pataleando a esta isla paradisiaca desde el lluvioso “Blighty” – como es a veces conocido el Reino Unido por los británicos!). Como equipo, reunimos experiencia culinaria; de hospitalidad; diseño y arquitectura; y negocios y mercadeo, para crear algo que estamos convencidos de que es realmente especial. Todos tenemos pasiones para traer un servicio de hospitalidad idóneo y de alta calidad a aquellos que vienen a Bocas, y crear experiencias y memorias personalizadas de hospedaje y gastronómicas.
¿Qué nos depara el futuro?
Doña Mara es el primero – de muchos seguramente – proyectos que nosotros cuatro armaremos juntos. Estamos orgullosos de que con el hotel podamos rendir homenaje a su homónimo – la madre de Joseph, Xiomara Herrera (alias Doña Mara), quien alimentó la pasión de Joseph por la carrera culinaria – y también a llevar el hotel en una nueva dirección pero manteniéndose leal a sus raíces.
La crisis global actual ha llevado a todos a analizar lo que es importante y lo que no, por qué cada uno de nosotros hace lo que hace. Nos sentimos muy optimistas acerca del futuro, acerca de lo que nosotros, el hotel, el restaurante y Bocas tenemos para ofrecer como destino. Cuando estén listos para experimentar la verdadera esencia de Bocas y probar los sabores culturales del caribe, estaremos esperándolos!
